Needle Felting: Brush Mat Vs Sponge

Hello everyone :) Recently I purchased a felting brush mat in a local craft store mostly out of curiosity. Up until then I had been felting on sponge but the more I used it, the more the sponge would catch onto the bards of my needle and come through onto my work. This is inevitable but it's just such a pain to have to keep stopping and pick out all of the bits.

This lead me to buy the brush mat :) It surprised me how dense the mat was and this convinced me that it would be perfect for needle felting. It also said on the packet that it made the felt look good from both sides. So with all these claims, who wouldn't buy?

So what do I think? Well, it does make for a good surface to felt on in terms of its density, and is good for larger felting pieces. However, I think its downfall is that I find that it isn't very good for smaller, more detailed work as the felt just slips into the bristles. Also, when you set your work down onto the mat, the felt gets caught onto the plastic bristles and therefore it can pull out looser strands such as beards or hair.

So to help you make your decision I think the questions you need to ask yourself are:

1. Would you rather pay a one off payment of around £10 every so often or £3 every month? (Depending on how often you felt)

2. What are you felting? And how? Are you felting smaller, more detailed pieces? Or are you feting onto material? If you are felting onto material then I would recommend the brush mat 100% as the mat has nothing to catch to ruin your work.

Well I hope that gave you some food for thought :)
